Quote: asylum (a shelter from danger or hardship)

Reflections: Even though a fairly simple and straightforward definition I believe that it encompasses the myriad of connotations associated with the word.  Specifically in Devil's highway we encounter many people which seek danger and hardship to receive asylum in their own country once they return, by means of financial security.  Interestingly enough the word asylum has a second meaning which is to describe a "mental institution."  I also think that the Devil's highway can be compared to a mental institution because all the people who enter are in some way changed either mentally or phisically as described during the many examples in Devil's highway.
