COYOTE

Quote: "For the Coyotes Your Needs
Are Only A Business And
They Don't Care About Your Safety
Or The Safety of Your Family.
DON'T PAY THEM OFF WITH YOUR LIVES!!!"
Reflections: In this quote the word Coyote is use in a negative connotation. The Coyotes are characterized as selfish human beings, whose main source of income is the smuggling of people into the United States. They don't care about the immigrants, to them immigrants are just business.

Quote: "Don Moi was a fixer for the shadowy Coyotes of Sonora, Robin Hood figure to the muchachos of Veracruz."
Reflections: In this quote, the usage of the word 'Coyote' is explicitly in a negative context, as it is used with the adjective 'shadowy'. Don Moi being the man who runs the Coyotes, he is named a 'fixer', which implies some evil or dishonesty.

Quote: "But the two things that most unify the two sides are each one's deep distrust of its own government, and each side's simmering hatred for the human smugglers, the gangsters who call themselves Coyotes"
Reflections: This quote shows the coyotes in a negative light due to it highlighting that the border patrol and the Mexican consulate who are on the opposing sides of this issue both do not like them. This shows they have no real purpose and offer no benefit to the people, and only look out for themselves. Also that they are nothing but "smugglers" and "gangsters".

Quote: "The Mexican army patrols the borderlands, sort of, though nobody can find them, probably because the Coyotes pay the soldiers off."
Reflections: In this quote the word Coyote is used in a negative connotation. The Coyotes are displayed bribing the Mexican army patrols so that the walkers can pass through; this illegal transaction inflicts a selfish and mischievous image of a Coyote conducting business.

Quote: "Every week, walkers are left to die by their guias. It is so common that it must be seen as a standard Coyote practice. A business move."
Reflections: For this situation to be so common it leads the audience to believe that the coyotes are dishonest and have no real intention of helping others, but only helping themselves.
It gives the coyotes a negative connotation and shows that they are greedy and selfish. The coyotes imply that they are careless of the walkers lives by calling it a business move.

Quote: "The fiendish ploys of the Coyotes offer you many oppurtunities to hone your signcutting skills. The whole game for their team is to pass by invisbly, and the team on this side is paid to see the invisible. They Coyotes score when they make it, and the Migras score when they don't."
Reflections: This quote depicts the Coyotes as being a part of a large game where one side has to outsmart the other. The connotation of "fiendish" makes the Coyotes sound like they will play dirty in order to get ahead or acheive their goal of getting the immigrants to the other side by whatever means necessary. It seems like the whole situation is a game of cat and mouse.

Quote:"Beyond the O'Odham village of Sells, near the Coyote (human-smuggler) pickup point of mile marker 27, there is a dirt bank beside Highway 86."
Reflections:This quote is the first time that the term coyote is introduced with what is means to be a coyote. To me it makes me think that the coyotes think of immigrants as cargo for delivery. The immigrants must be delivered to the pick up point and then shipped across the border illegally, like drugs :).

Quote:"In the milieu, it was quite attractive to be a Coyote. You could tell yourself you were a kind of ciliv rights activist, a young Zapata liberator of the poor and the downtrodden. In short a revolutionary."
Reflections:This is one of the few opposing views of Coyotes I've come across in this book. They are seen as heroes in this sense - not the terrible gangsters as displayed previously, because the Latino youth sees the Illegal immigrants as taking back what was once their own lands.

Quote: "Volunteers from the ACLU in Arizona have been subjecting the Minutemen to daily surveillance, even going so far as to alert coyotes (human smugglers) and illegal immigrants that they're in the vicinity."
Reflections: The word 'coyotes' is used in a negative connotation. They describe them as 'human smugglers'. Smuggling is an act of illegal action which the coyotes do. Also this quote explains how the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) is helping out the coyotes by getting them across the border.

Quote: "Where are the pinches coyotes?, the temperature was ninety-five degrees in the shade. Mendez didnt appear."
Reflections: This quote gives the coyotes a bad reputation, because its obvious that Mendez has abandoned his crew in the middle of the desert. The temperature its really high and they dont have any water, chances of them surviving were very slim.

Quote: If not for the gulleys where they walked, the land funneling them into the Coyotes' tracks, they might have drifted away into the wasteland and died that day.
Reflections: The quote shows that although Coyotoes get a bad name for not caring about their 'cargo', they are intelligent men who realiese they need to find the right paths to take the immigrants through because they may be uncaring, they do not get paid unless they cross. By picking paths through gulleys, they gureentee the immigrants can not get lost and die on them.
