EL NORTE

Entry 1: Molly Hardy

Quote: "White Europeans conceived of and launched El Norte mania, just as white Europeans inhabiting the United States today bemoan it."

Reflections: This quote captures the positive and negative connotations of "El Norte." The "white Europeans" in the first section refer to the early colonizers who traveled north from Mexico to what is today the United States. The "white Europeans" in the second part refer to those already in the United States who dislike the Mexicans who come to "El Norte."

Quote: "He had an exotic cell phone, and he murmured into it, talking to mysterious people in El Norte."(47) "Do you think I'd let my clients wander to El Norte alone?" (49)

Reflections: Here you get the impression that the United States, which is what El Norte is referring to, is mysterious, a great unknown, and therefore dangerous. Don Moi uses words like wander and alone which evoke thoughts of fear.

Quote: "The saw many wonders as they traveled north. In some of their ancient beliefs, north was described as the direction of death. North was the home of winter, and the underworld could be found there."

Reflections: In this quote, the author tells of a north folk-like belief in which the people whom been north describe it as one might describe Hell. The words "direction of death," "winter," and "underworld," envoke fear. North, a place you wouldn't want to travel.

Quote: "They gathered at the bus terminal and boarded the bus Don Moi had rented for them. A charter. They felt like millionaires. El Norte. It was a trip of over two thousand miles. The bus was fairly long and fairly modern..."

Reflections: In this quote can you feel how the immigrants, during the course of their tough travel, once "felt like a millionaire" just because of a "fairly" nice bus which they boarded. At this moment, El Norte, which is two thousand miles away, feels like it's so close, ready to lay out the American dreams for them.
