GUIAS

Entry 1: Jacob Cepeda

Quote: "Guias now give their walkers cocaine to make them walk faster and longer. Of course, cocaine helps their hearts explode, too. If the guia has been paid in advance, he doesn't care if you get to your toilet scrubbing job or not."

Reflections: When I read this I thought, "Why would people allow themselves to be treated like that?" Then I realized they're just trying to find a better life and escape poverty. One can see that the Guia's, or guides, are only care about the money and not one bit about the people's safety.

Quote: "Every week, walkers are left to die by their guias."

Reflections: The guias no exactly what they are doing when they lead the immigrants, but some of them keep their walkers ignorant because all they want is to do the job quickly and get paid. This quote did not shock me when I read it, it's just the harsh reality that people are greedy.

Quote: "Being a Coyote, even a lowly guia, was also muy macho. Jesus had suddenly gone from being a put-upon poor boy making bricks in the wicked Sonoran heat to being an outlaw. He was lil' Pancho Villa. He had the immense forces of the United states federal government after him"

Reflections: This quote talks about guias as the ordinary coyote, nothing special. urrea adds to the esteem of the coyotes in this quote even though the main coyotes in this book such as jesus were just "lowly" coyotes with a big coyote ego.

Entry 4:Heather Kim

Quote:No money. That part is true:guias seldom carried money. Like the bad clothes, the lack of money would serve to disguise them should they be arrested.

Reflections:These sentences explain how guias did not carry any money in case they were caught. I thought this actually makes coyotes collect money from walkers whenever they need money. In this page 152, it described how a coyote called Mendez demanded money from walkers by seducing them that he would get water for them. In reality, he tried to steal money and let walkers. die.

Entry 5: Kelsey Evans

Quote: "and guias ("GEE-yahs"), or guides... They actually cut sign, make trails, and lead walkers into the desert. Young men, mostly, who are as disposable as the polleros. They can die as easily as walkers and the organization will not be hurt. There are always more fools willing."

Reflections: This quote relflects that the guias or coyotes aren't as high up as they believe they are. While they themselves don't care about the people they are leading, the people in charge of them don't care what happens to the coyotes. It is all about the money and who is able to get their hands onto it first.

Entry 6:Alfredo Bernal

Quote:"Guides are mostly tough boys who earn a hundred dollars a head every time they lead a group across the border. They never reveal their names, so if they die, they are fated to lie in the potter's fields of Tucson and Yuma"

Reflections: Guides are portrayed as tough bad guys who aren't afraid of death. It seems as if the only reason they are in it is for the money. Nothing else is of importance.
