ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT

Quote:"In the eyes of the dominant white culture and the federal government," asserts observer Arnoldo Garcia of the National Network for Immigant and Refugee Rights, "'immigrant' has become a racialized category."

Reflections:I thought this sentence is significant because it directly relates the problem of illegal immigration to the racialized category. If this connection is made, the controversy surrounding this topic gets sensitive and shows somewhat similar problem black people had in 1960s.

Quote: “Mexicans, when not giving up, when not running like maniacs, often got wide-eyed, like a two-year old stealing cookies. I didn’t do anythin’! I was just out here looking around!”

Reflections: I realized that NO matter what we do or where we go just because we have brown skin some people will consider us an “illegal immigrant,” it is sad that we are being compared to a “two-year old stealing cookies.” When all we want is to have nothing to worry about….

Source: Maier, Thoman. "Invisivle labor"

Quote: "Unlike immigrants from previous eras, a whole generation of immigrants today have been called 'illegals,' starting their new life in America under such a dubious cloud."

Reflections: In this quote the author implicitly throws a question, asking why immigrants today should be branded 'illegals' whereas those who got in America long ago were accepted, even though they're not different at all in their purpose of coming to America and in their 'legal' status.

Source: Stillwell "OPINION: The Return of the minuteman"

Quote: "Though illegal immigration encompasses all nationalities, by far the largest chunk comes from Mexico, and, for many open-borders opponents, Bush's cozy relationship with Mexican President Vicente Fox is at the heart of the matter" (3).

Reflections: Stillwell bases all of his thoughts about the Minuteman against Bush. He is relating the "illegal immigrants" to being Bush's fault because he is almost having a conxpiracy with the Mexican President.

Source: Susan Caroll "Along the U.S.-Mexico border, a dilemma of the dead"

Quote: "Like many medical examiners and county officials along the U.S.-Mexico border, Stern faces a complicated and delicate problem-what to do with dozens of John Does, many believed to be illegal immigrants, who end up in county coolers and eventually in anonymous pauper's graves, all at the expense of taxpayers."

Reflections: In this quote the, the author shows contrary opinions, or emotions, towards illegal immigrants, by saying how they "end up" in "coolers" and "graves," but at the end saying "at the expense of taxpayers." It is confusing whether she's supportive of immigrant workers or not.
