POLLEROS

Entry 1:

Source:Carly Fritz

Quote:" A pollero would be a chicken-wrangler. The level of esteem the smugglers hold for their charges is stated plainly. They're simply chickens."

Reflections: What we think of as "coyotes", or the designated leader of the walkers, are better known in the circle of human smuggling, as the chickens. They are the lowest level and most likely least paid on the todem pole in the business. They are impersonal and would leave you dead in the middle of the Devil's Highway. They are like the kids who sell drugs in school, the risk isn't worth the job and it's in bad taste.

Quote:""Coyotes always collected the money from their pollos before leaving them to die."

Reflections: in this quote, i read "coyotes" but i understood "pollero".  "Coyotes" in this book are feindish people who plot to destroy others to benefit for themseleves and in this book, they are.  BUT in this qoute, although it did read "coyote" i saw it as "pollero" in disguise.  He got all the "pollos" together-a pollero will do that to get them ready for death-and he left them there to die. Which is EXACTLY what Mendez was doing.  the money taking was the "coyote" side of Mendez, while the gathering and leadings to death was the "pollero" side.

Quote: "In the summer of 2002, an idiot pollero driver with twenty-three pollos on board went the wrong way on Interstate 8 in California.  Lights out."

Reflections: In this case, I think the word pollero refered to the person taking the immigrants, "pollos," to their destination.  After reading what happend, I am in shock that someone would make a mistake like that and sacrifice lives just for money.

Quote: "The Mexican government's border sign near Sasabe doesn't actually say 'Coyotes.' It uses the hipper slang of the border. It says, 'Los Polleros.' A pollero would be a chicken wrangler."

Reflections: The way the Mexican government calls the coyotes "polleros" gives us an idea of the way they think about the illegal immgrants. They simply believe that the immigrants are plainly just chickens. In a way, it almost seems as if the Mexican government holds immigrants to the lowest level and doesn't care what will happen to them.
