UNDOCUMENTED WORKER

Entry 1: Molly Hardy

Source: McConahay, Mary Jo. "They Die in Brooks County." The Texas Observer June 1, 2007.

Quote:"Since an undocumented migrant under pursuit grabbed one of the running cars and took off, the women of the neighborhood dropped the custom."

Reflections: This sentence does not exactly offer a definition of an "undocumented migrant," but it certainly gives the word "undocumented" a negative connotation. Before the quote, the interviewed members of the community discuss how friendly the "immigrants" used to be. Now, when the people from Mexico are perceived as a threat to the community, they are referred to as "undocumented migrants."

Source:Jonsson, Patrik. "Backlash emerges against Latino culture." The Christian Science Monitor 19 July 2006.

Quote:"Still, the restrictions come about because of inaccurate stereotypes that all Hispanics are undocumented or poor..."

Reflections: Although this sentence does not offer a definition of "undocumented", it does portray the homeland American view of all immigrants. After the quote, it goes on to say how all people are "getting nostalgic about our own past, but dreading the lastest newcomers." People fear change in their environment and therefore fight against and/or find a scapegoat for any negative consequences that come with it.

Quote:“They make up a large share of all workers in a few more detailed occupational categories, including 24% of all workers employed in farming jobs, 17% in cleaning, 36% in insulation installation, 29% in roofing and drywall installation, 27% of butchers and other food processing.”

Reflections:The fact is that it is more than 100% of undocumented workers are working in the sates doing various types of jobs that US citizens do not want to take; and undocumented workers are the ones who are brining up the economy. Also undocumented workers are the ones who are the less-skill in labor and earn wages significantly less than U.S. born laborers. So why not at least give us a better health condition in the workforce; if not paying us better wages.

Source: Ratcliffe, R.G. "Illegal workers the talk of Texas." Houston Chronicle. 3 January 2007.

Quote: "...and an estimated 70 percent of the 26,000 births at Houston and Dallas public hospitals in 2005 were to mothers who are undocumented immigrants"

Reflections: In this case, the author uses immigrant instead of worker in order to allow the reader to have a clear understanding of who these people really are. The author also connotates that the immigrants shouldn't belong by phrasing together 'undocumented' and 'immigrant' together. Previously in the article, the author stated that it costs the government more money even though these workers are a driving force to the economy.

Quote: Uncertainty over a planned federal crackdown on employers who hire undocumented workers is keeping Houston immigration lawyers, human resources consultants and staffing agencies busy.

Reflections:  In the article "Attitudes on hiring are shifting," Jenalia Moreno reveals the mass number of illegals working under false visas and social security numbers.  Accoring to Moreno, the Department of Homeland Security ran the social security numbers and sent notices to employers who had employees with numbers that do not match in the federal database.  Employes were give 93 days of recieving the "no match" letters to fire the workers or face the risk of fines.  It's amazing how many people are here illegally, working under false papers, and are getting away with it.  Despite the fact that we are trying to get rid of all undocumented workers, we will never be able to get them all.

Source:Andrea Batista Schlesinger "Immigration raid an 'economic dead end'" November 23, 2006 Chicago Sun Times

Quote:In 1999, the Immigration and Naturalization Service launched "Operation Vanguard," a program whose stated purpose was to remove the employment magnet that draws undocumented workers to the United States.

Reflections:Schlesiner uses 'undocumented workers' here to denote that they are subject to the target of INS and there is a great possiblity that they can be readily deported from the United States. The INS's primary purpose in 1999 was to remove the "employment magnet" that attracts the undocumented workers who come to the US to earn money without any legal visas.
